What are test strips

Test Strips are small pieces of paper that can detect the presence of Fentanyl or xylazine in different kinds of drugs and drug forms.

Why use test strips

Fentanyl and xylazine have increased in the drug supply and are ever present in many drugs, including: heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and more.

The NJ State Police reported that in the first half of 2024,  99.9% of the drugs tested in Atlantic County contained Fentanyl and 81% of the drugs contained Xylazine. Source NJSP:  Drug Monitoring Initiative.

Knowing that drugs contain Fentanyl or xylazine can provide options:  choose not to use, use less, use a different way, or use with someone who has Naloxone and is not using.

How to use test strips

Fentanyl and xylazine test strips are made by several different companies and may have slight differences. The directions are printed on the package. Generally speaking, the process to use a test is:

  1. Use a small amount of the drug, a half to a full teaspoon or water and mix them in a clean container.
  2. Place the test strip in the water and let it absorb for about 15 seconds.
  3. Allow the test strip to sit on a flat surface for 2 to 5 minutes.
  4. Read the results.
