Naloxone / Narcan

What is Naloxone

Naloxone (brand name Narcan) is an easy-to-use nasal spray that can reverse an overdose and block the effects of opioids. It only works on opioids, such as heroin, morphine, oxycodone or fentanyl. When a person is showing signs of an overdose, this life saving drug is administered by spraying it in the victim’s nostrils. Although it can reverse an overdose, Naloxone does not have a long-lasting effect. It can wear off and a person can overdose again. Its effects are temporary which is why it is so important to seek medical attention as soon as possible after Naloxone is administered. Call 911 AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

The Good Samaritan Law

The Overdose Prevention Act or “Good Samaritan” law provides people with immunity if they call for police or other emergency help in the event of an overdose. People who are present at the scene of an overdose have immunity and will not be arrested or prosecuted.

Whether you are the witness or person experiencing an overdose, the law protects both from prosecution and arrest.

Also, you will NOT be held liable if you administer Naloxone/Narcan in an emergency situation. So if you believe that someone is experiencing an overdose, you can provide Naloxone/Narcan and will not be subject to civil liability or any criminal charges.
